The Ashtapadi Festival presents new choreography of all the twenty four songs in Odissi dance

Ashtapadi, a Festival of Dance

(12-14 Sept. 2014, Friday-Monday) at 6:30 PM

The Ashtapadi Festival presents new choreography of all the twenty four songs in Odissi dance from 12th thru 14th of September 2014 (Friday thru Sunday) at 6:30 PM every evening at Rabindra Mandap, Bhubaneswar.

The new choreography in Odissi is based on adaptation of the original music composition of Dr Subas Pani for ‘Sampoorna Geetagovinda’, a set of five Audio CDs released in 2008. Renowned Odissi Guru late Shri Gangadhar Pradhan and senior dancer-choreographers Aruna Mohanty, Sharmila Biswas and Meera Das in creative collaboration with Dr Pani have choreographed all the twenty four songs in Odissi dance in solo, duet and group formats. These have already been showcased at Delhi in the first two editions of Ashtapadi, a unique festival that presents songs of Geetagovinda in dance performances of Indian classical forms during 2010 and 2011. Geetagovinda Pratisthana has now brought this festival to Odisha to be presented at Bhubaneswar on the occasion of devarpan & lokarpan of Odia book ‘Sampoorna Geetagovinda’ by Dr Subas Pani. This fourth edition of Ashtapadi at Bhubaneswar is a unique and first ever complete stage performance in dance of all twenty four songs of Jayayadeva’s Geetagovinda in solo, duet and group formats in a single festival.

The dance performances will see participation of senior artistes Aruna Mohanty, Sharmila Biswas and Meera Das and dancers from the repertory of Orissa Dance Academy and Odissi Dance and Vision Movement. The entire festival will be with live music with participation of senior gurus and experienced and young musicians on mardala, khol, manjeera, venu, sitar and violin. Almost fifty creative and performing artistes will participate in this three day festival.
